How can peer group learning help children?

Children are most comfortable among themselves and share their problems or issues among their friends rather than parents and teachers. They rely on the support of their friends and peers more than their family. With peers and friends, they have a safe space where they are not afraid to be judged or scolded whereas they cannot expect such understanding from their family. Children have a different kind of bonding with their peers and that helps each other to overcome problems that they do not share with others. They help each other with studies, dance, music, arts, plays, debate, and sports. Most of the learning is taken care of among students themselves. We can use this as an opportunity to help them learn and grow. Peer leaning or peer group learning is a setup designed to promote learning among students in a positive environment. Learning is an ongoing process that has no particular rule or manual, there is no distinguished approach or strategies for learning. One can use any method in order to begin the learning process. Students when study in a group tends to understand faster and better in comparison to individual studying. They are able to understand the concept easily in a trusted environment. Peers are people of the same age group, and in peer-group studying, they do not have a defined role like teachers, they are not experts but they help each other regardless of it.



Types of Peer Groups

Innovative learning Model: In this students in the same year form a study group to assist each other with projects, practices, concepts, and course-related content. Students directly interact with each other in their exams and learn together.

Private Study Groups: This is a general model which is quite an informal type as peer learning takes place in groups where they make their own strategies and approach the goal of learning.

Proctor Model: In this type, senior students teach juniors and try to help them with their expertise and experience. This helps the juniors a lot as they have already studied the topic and can explain it in depth.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     

Discussion Seminars: In this model, students are assigned several tasks and are given topics that they have to prepare and then present it in a seminar. This consists of active discussion and debate for which they study together and prepare for it.

Benefits: Students do not hesitate to ask anything as they are among fellow mates and they have a comfort level within their group.

As the learning experience is different, they participate in activities with full zeal and enthusiasm.  While participating they learn and acquire the habit of exchanging ideas.

They have the opportunity to learn different viewpoints, tricks, and methods to learn.

Students take responsibility for their own learning and parents need not worry about their routine as they already have made it for themselves.

The student acquires a lot of skills such as self-preparation, group leading, collaborative learning, organizational and planning skills, etc which also prepares them for higher education.
